Aggies advance in playoffs
Although the Aggies got off to a slow start, they kicked it into overdrive and ran over the Heart River Cougars 39-0 in first round playoff action.
“We were a little slow out of the box offensively, but we got a few things going and it worked for us,” said Velva Head Coach Larry Sandy. “Our defensive scheme matched up pretty well with them and our kids executed well. It’s nice for the offense to know that if they mess up, the defense can get the job done.”
That rocky start to the game saw the first quarter nearly end scoreless, but Collin Kittelson took a two yard jog into the end zone with less than 2 minutes on the scoreboard, giving the Aggies a 6-0 lead after one period.
Velva cut loose in the second quarter, turning in three touchdown runs. Kittelson took in the second score on a 16 yard run in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Garrett Wible booted the PAT and the Aggies were up 13-0.
Just 2 minutes later, senior Michael Wiest plowed 4 yards for another Velva touchdown. It was Wiest again on the 1 yard dive for the score in the closing seconds of the half. Wible’s kick made the halftime score 26-0.
Quarterback Jon Mack took the keeper in for the next Aggie score to start out the second half of the game. Wiest wrapped up the scoring with a 70 yard punt return into the end zone, followed by Wible’s kick.
The Aggies took a knee for the final six minutes of the game.
