Aggies just miss region
The Aggies’ gut-wrenching battle with Rugby to earn a berth in the Region 6 tournament ended with the Aggies on the short end of a 42-45 score.
“It was a good basketball game played by two good teams,” said Velva Coach Matt Weidler. “We had a few opportunities we let go. It just wasn’t our night.”
Junior Taylor O’Shea paced the Aggies with 13 points, including 2 three-pointers. Zach Podoll and Josh Sandy drained 8 each, Jon Mack hit for 6 and Michael Wiest had 5 with a three pointer.
“I am proud of the boys,” Weidler said. “They overcame some adversity and never quit.”
The Aggies opened the tournament last Friday with a 48-43 win over the Drake-Anamoose Raiders.
“The kids kept fighting the whole night,” Weidler said. “They were down by 11 at one time in the second half and came back and that was great to see.”
O’Shea was the offensive leader with 13 points, followed by Podoll and Mack with 12 each. Wiest put in 7 and Sandy hit 4.
For D-A, Nathan Martin set the pace with 18, followed by Andrew Rott with 12 and Brady Schmaltz with 6. Derek Fahy put in 4 and Jon Sortino had 3.
The Aggies fell into the consolation bracket with a 59-50 loss on Saturday to Westhope-Newburg.
“We dug ourselves a big hole in the first half,” Weidler said. “We did a nice job coming back and taking the lead, but we spent too much energy coming back and ran out of gas in the fourth.”
Wiest led the Aggie offense on Saturday night with 17 points, followed closely by Mack who nailed 14. O’Shea drained 9, Podoll put away 5, Sandy had 3 and Zach Niebuhr hit for 2.
Velva Athletic Directory Larry Long was named AD of the Year at the District 11 Tournament, and Velva’s Jon Mack was named to the All District Team.
