Babe Ruth heads for state
The Velva Post 39 Babe Ruth baseball team is headed for the state tournament after successfully defending their title at last weekend’s District 1 tournament in Velva.
The home team steamrolled a young Burlington crew 32-0 in the first round of the tournament, then went on to beat Surrey 11-0 in the semis. Ryan Kuntz and Derek Fahy pitched the opening game, and Ty Bruner pitched the 3-hit shutout in the semis.
Velva and Surrey faced off in a rematch for the championship, and Velva pulled out a 6-5 victory in a full seven inning game.
Zach Podoll took the mound for the first three innings, and Bruner pitched the final two. Bruner also scored the game winning run in the 7th inning off Fahy’s fielder’s choice.
Velva will now advance to the State Babe Ruth Tournament in Mayville.
