Girls take District 11 title
The Velva netters picked the perfect time to peak as they fought their way to the District 11 championship last week. The number two seeded Aggies took out first place Bottineau in three straight matches, 28-26, 25-23, 25-22, and shut down the Stars stranglehold on the district title.
While Velva took it 3-0, it was a tight contest with both teams playing at the top of their games. Brittney Thingstad came out with 18 kills and 14 digs. Bailey Thomas had 7 kills, Sarah Weidler 4 and Ali Podoll 3. Weidler led the defense with 25 digs while Ally Nelson save 12 and Taylor Brudevold 9.
The Aggies came into the title game riding high after a stellar performance in the semis against Rugby. The girls beat the Panthers handily, going 25-18, 25-11, 25-11.
“Probably our best game all year,” said Velva Coach Diana Thingstad. “We played very well as a team and got stronger as the night wore on.”
The win gave the girls confidence and got them excited about playing Bottineau the next night, according to the coach.
