Girls take third in region
While Velva volleyball coach Diana Thingstad called the Aggies semifinal loss to Our Redeemers “heartbreaking,” this determined crew didn’t let it keep them down. The girls came back to the court at the Region 6 tournament in Minot and took down the Bottineau Stars in three straight to claim third place. After repeated first round losses at the regional contest, it was an important accomplishment for the netters.
“We came a long way this season,” said Thingstad, who was named Region 6 Coach of the Year. “We had a few ups and down, but managed to peak at the right time.”
Brittney Thingstad led the charge against the Stars with 21 kills and 3 aces. Bailey Thomas had 56 kills, Whitney Boehm 3, Sarah Weidler nailed 2 aces and 2 kills, Ali Podoll had 4 aces and Chessa Baumgardner and Ally Nelson each had a kill. The girls beat Bottineau 25-15, 27-25 and 25-15.
“The season ended with a strong third place finish in a notoriously tough region,” Coach Thingstad said. “I couldn’t be more proud of my girls.”
