Legion nine head for state

Velva’s Post 39 Legion team is on its way to the State Legion Tournament in Beulah this weekend after winning last weekend’s Section 5 tournament in Surrey.
“The tourney was a big confidence booster for our team, we scored a lot of runs and played solid defense,” said Coach Travis Bruner. “It will take more of the same for us to be successful in the state tourney.”
After sitting out the first round with a bye, Velva opened sectional play against the Minot Metros, and after an up and down affair, came away with a 15-9 win.
Garrett Wible pitched the first three innings, then Jon Mack came in with Velva down by 2 and picked up the win.
At bats, Wible went 2 for 3 with 2 RB:I, while Ty Bruner, Tyler Mack Austyn Kittelson and Zach Podoll hit 2 for 4, with Kittelson and Podoll each driving in 2 runs. Jon Mack connected only once, but made it count with a grand slam in the fifth inning.

VELVA    0    5    0    0    9    1    x    15    13    1

Velva won its way to the championship game by defeating Surrey 13-8. Again, Jon Mack played a key role in the win, both on the mound and on base.
Mack took over pitching duties from Ty Bruner at the top of the sixth inning with the score at 8-8 and bases loaded. A strike-out and a fly out ended Surrey’s threat, and Velva came out in the bottom of the inning with 5 runs to take a healthy lead.
And the run that broke the tie was Mack’s, who came home on a wild pitch. Velva went ahead 12-8 when Wible skyed one for a three run homer.
At bats, Trenton Bruner and Tyler Ystaas went 2 for 3, Ty Bruner and Jon Mack were 2 for 4, while Kittelson, Podoll and Wible had 1 hit each.

SURREY    0    0    4    0    2    2    0    8    14    3
VELVA    1    3    2    2    0    5    x    13    12    1

The championship game found number one seed Velva facing off with number two Rolette. Post 39 came home with a 6-2 win and the sectional plaque.
Trenton Bruner took the mound for Velva, and threw five scoreless innings before being relieved by Wible in the sixth with Velva up 5-0. Wible allowed only 3 hits and 2 runs before shutting down Rolette and sealing the deal.
At bats, Wible went 2 for 3 with a solo homerun, Tyler Mack was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Kittelson was 1 for 2.

ROL    0    0    0    0    0    2    0    2    5    3
VELVA    0    1    0    2    2    1    x    6    5    2

“We played a great tourney, we came up with a lot of big hits in big situations,” Coach Bruner said. “When we had runners in scoring position we usually got a hit to drive them in.”
Velva will begin state tournament play at 11 a.m. MST in Beulah on Wednesday, July 29.
