Legion plays deep into state tourney
Velva’s Post 39 couldn’t pull out two wins over Casselton in last weekend’s State American Legion Tournament, and the 1-10 loss to Casselton in the loser-out bracket sent Velva home sooner than they would have liked.
Velva opened tournament play with a couple of powerful outings, beating Enderlin 15-5 in 5 innings in the first game of the tournament, and then thumping Casselton 13-3 on day two.
But on Friday, Post 39 ran into a wall as LaMoure’s ace pitcher shut down Velva’s hitting machine.
The game opened with Ty Bruner taking a walk, then stealing second and scoring on a bad throw. Trenton Bruner nailed a double, and Velva seemed well on its way to adding up more hits.
But LaMoure’s Gage Dunn threw 19 strikeouts in the game and allowed only 2 hits, including a double from Trenton Bruner. The final score was 10-1 and knocked Velva into the loser’s bracket and a rematch with Casselton.
Instead of another walk-away win for Velva, Casselton came back with a vengence and knocked Post 39 out of the tournament in a 12-6 win.
