Matmen take 12 to state
After taking the Region 3 Dual title the previous weekend, the Velva Aggies went to Burlington and took first in the individual tournament as well, and qualified 12 wrestlers for the state individual tournament. (The top four place winners advance.)
Two Velva grapplers won titles: Derrick Casey at 112 and Jimi Bridges at 160.
Casey came out with first period pin over Minot Ryan and a 14-2 major decision to claim first. Bridges recorded a third period pin over New Town and a 4-1 decision of Rolla-St. John for his championship win.
At 103, Nate Monk finished second for the Aggies, winning his first match with a pin and then falling to one in the title match.
Zach Schatz (119) lost his first two matches, but pinned Minot Ryan in the consolation match.
At 125, Adam Dean lost his first match, but came back with two pins for a third place finish. Colten Lee ended the day as the runner-up at 130, falling to Rugby in the second period, and Nathan Schmaltz claimed third place at 135 with an 8-6 decision.
Austyn Kittelson won an 11-5 decision to get into the finals, then ended in second place after losing 8-15 to Rolla at 140.
Nathan Dean (145) ended the day in sixth place, while Alex Monk finished as a fourth place qualifier at 152.
The Aggies forfeited at 171, and at 189, Taylor Barstad came in at fourth to make the state cut.
Jed Jespersen stuck Stanley’s grappler in the second period to win third place and trip to state at 215.
First year wrestler Garrett Wible also made his way to the state individual tournament, finishing third by pinning DL-B’s heavyweight in the opening seconds of that match.
Velva finished the day with 180 team points, and will head for Fargo to compete in both the dual and individual tournaments.
