Surrey surprises Velva
After beating the Surrey by 20 points earlier in the season, District 11 champions, the Velva Aggies, were expected by many to handily defeat the Mustangs in the opening round of Region 6 play. But in an unexpected turn of events, a last minute shot gave the District 12 fourth place team a 57-56 win.
A slow start by the Aggies enabled the Mustangs to not only keep up, but take the lead through the first half of play in Monday night’s game. It wasn’t until the second half that Velva came alive, closing the gap and finally taking a slim 3 point lead in the third quarter.
The Aggies widened their lead to 8 by deep into the fourth, and appeared on their way to a come-from-behind victory. But Surrey came back again, and gained a 2 point lead with less than a minute to play.
Tyler Ystaas gave the lead back to the Aggies, nailing a 3-pointer with just 12 seconds on the clock, 56-55. But at the buzzer, Surrey’s Cameron Aberle sank one from the field to take the win away from Velva.
Josh Weidler led the Aggies offense with 20 points, followed by Cole Lauinger with 18. Ystaas scored 9, Michael Wiest and Jon Mack had 3 points each, Josh Sandy had 2, and Zach Podoll had 1.
The Aggies shot 22 of 53 for 42 percent from the field while Surrey went 22 of 46 for 48 percent. Velva was 60 percent from the stripe and Surrey was 53 percent.
