Velva undefeated, heads to playoffs
Following a decisive 43-7 win over North Prairie last Friday night, the Aggies enter this weekend’s playoffs as the only undefeated Division A team in the state. That gives Velva homefield advantage through at least part of the playoffs, which begin this Saturday against Des Lacs-Burlington (1-7) at 1:30 p.m. (Velva beat DLB 33-0 earlier in the season.)
“Homefield is nice, the kids get used to that, and hopefully we’ll continue to advance,” said Velva Head Coach Larry Sandy. “I think we handled DLB pretty well up front last time, although we didn’t always take care of the ball well enough.”
With a first round win, the Aggies would move to the quarter finals to host the Region 4 winner between Beach and North Prairie. The semifinals could find them on the road, however, as it is an even-numbered year and if Killdeer emerges as the Region 4 champion, Velva would have to travel, despite a better record.
Sandy said the team is looking pretty good heading into the playoffs, and the team will be working on basics this week. He noted that the Aggies have developed some depth through the season, allowing them to sit some injured players and allow them adequate healing time.
