Garrison Dam - 80.000 cfs- 05/30/2011
Water thunders from the Garrison Dam's regulatory tunnels and into the Missouri River at a rate of about 80,000 cubic feet per second on May 28. The tunnels are able to release 98,000 cfs, and will join the power plant and emergency spillway to release a total of 150,000 cfs by mid-June, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Beulah Boy Scout Pack 19 Pinewood Derby- 03/25/2011
The Beulah Civic Center was filled with smiles and shouts of encouragement as Beulah Boy Scout Pack No. 19 held their annual Pinewood Derby Feb. 25 in Beulah.
For the derby, each scout was issued a block of wood, two axles and four wheels -- and given free rein to let their imaginations run wild. Color and carving were allowed, the only rule being that the car weighed five ounces or less.
The derby this year consisted of 12 cars racing in two rounds made up of 12 heats each, and awards were given out for craftsmanship and overall time in three different subgroups.
In the category of craftsmanship Levi Weigum placed first in the Tiger/Wolf subgroup; Spencer Mellmer placed first in the Bear subgroup; and Tanner Palaniuk placed first in the Webelos subgroup.
In overall race times, Aaron Ripplinger placed first in the Tiger/Wolf subgroup, Mellmer placed first in the Bear subgroup and Trenton Solem placed first in the Webelos subgroup.
Ripplinger took home overall race winner, while Mellmer was top vote-getter in the craftsmanship division.

Heritage Outbound Winter Adventure: Atlatl demonstration- 02/16/2011
Beulah fifth-grader Emily Alt tries her hand at spear throwing using an atlatl during Heritage Outbound Winter Adventure Saturday, Feb. 12 at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site near Stanton, N.D. The atlatl is an ancient device used to achieve greater velocity when throwing a spear. In addition to atlatl demonstrations, the event included snowshoeing, ice gliders, crafts, and a traditional roasted buffalo meal, flute music, story-telling and bonfire inside the earth lodge.
