Airbag explosion- 10/19/2011
Hazen Fire and Rescue personnel set off an airbag during a vehicle extrication demonstration with the Mercer County Ambulance Oct. 17 in Hazen, N.D.
The airbag's inflation system reacts sodium azide with potassium nitrate to produce nitrogen gas. Hot blasts of the nitrogen inflate the airbag at up to 200 miles per hour. The powdery substance released from the airbag is regular cornstarch or talcum powder to keep the bags pliable and lubricated while they're in storage.
Emergency responders cut a vehicle's battery cables at the scene of a crash to prevent the airbag from deploying during the extrication process.

North Dakota High School Coaches Association 2011 Hall of Fame inductee Leland Opp- 08/04/2011
Leland Opp, Hazen, is inducted into the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame July 28 at the Best Western in Mandan, N.D. In addition, Opp was named the 2011 National Coach of the Year in Girls’ Track and Field.
In 21 years as Hazen's head girls' track and field coach, Leland amassed 20 Region 5 titles, seven state championship titles, one state runner-up title, 17 regional coach of the year honors and eight Class B state coach of the year awards. In total, Opp is credited with 215 girls' track and field victories.
