Centennial celebrations helped punctuate regularly-scheduled tournaments and events. The area continued to see growth, with more likely on the way for 2014.
The following are some of the top stories that made local headlines this past year.

Upgrades to the jail and courthouse

The Mercer County Commission kicked off the year with talks on whether to update the county detention facilities. Both Mercer County risk manager Jim Albers and Sheriff Dean Danzeisen spoke on behalf of the updates, noting that improvements would need to be made to both the structure and the dispatch equipment banks. By the end of the year some of the updates had been applied, which helped lessen a few upgrades for the proposed renovations to the courthouse and detention center, which were still being tweaked at the year’s end.
