Conditions look hopeful heading toward harvest

There are few clouds on the horizon as crops in Mercer County ripen in the summer sun, Mercer County Extension Agent Craig Askim said.

Winter wheat and barley have nearly finished turning and harvest should start within the week, Askim said. Barring severe weather, those crops should have excellent yields and quality. Statewide, about 20 percent of the barley crop has turned. The five-year average for this time of year is about two-thirds of the crop having turned.
