Elementary school levels the field
By Amy Nash
Beulah elementary school has been providing equal opportunities for learning. Principal Amber Skalsky said “the only time that these students all have a level playing field is when they are in school.”
Skalsky asked the teachers at Beulah elementary school “why do we impose expectation on kids when the playing field changes for them?” Students have different demographics, lifestyles and schedules in their homes that teachers have no control over, but teachers have the same expectations on them.
Some kids go home where they have a family who eats dinner at the table and some have a homework schedule. Others have parents who have shift work. There are students who don’t have academic support at home, but are still expected to come back with their work completed.
