Garbage a highlight of city meeting

People may soon be allowed to take their garbage to the transfer station in Beulah.
The city had to discontinue accepting household garbage and recycling at the transfer station when Waste Management Inc. stopped providing those services in Mercer County. The transfer station continued to accept tree and yard waste, metal and appliances. While the city is still searching for a vendor to accept recyclable materials, it has received three bids to carry the city’s roll off containers between the transfer station and the Mercer County Regional Landfill. Councilman Larry Hruby recommended the council accept a bid from Dakota Sanitation to do the trash hauling. He said the company would charge the city based on the time it spent moving the city’s trash. The Bismarck-based company has also taken over several of Waste Management’s contracts in the area, so the city could see a savings if it could coordinate its haul dates with surrounding communities.
