Mercer County’s new road
By Chris Erickson
While residents near it have said it’s been a public asset for quite some time, Mercer County Commissioners formally took charge of the road leading to Sakakawea Estates last week.
After one more round of evidence was brought in by the longtime champion of the proposal, Dennis Rohlfs, the commissioners unanimously decided that it was time for the county to take ownership of the road near its intersection to Highway 200 just west of Pick City.
Rohlfs was joined by nine other residents of the lakeside subdivision. Through the past few years, Rohlfs and residents have made their case that the road belonged to the county and not the residents of the Sakakawea Estates subdivision in multiple ways, including noting that a previous state’s attorney had informally declared it so.
