Pierce gets a distinguished honor
By Cindy Peterson
Mark Pierce has always held a soft spot in his heart for a coal miner.
He grew up in Coal Country, graduating high school from Scranton in 1996. His dad, Leonard Pierce, was a coal miner for 35 years and supported his family in that industry. Leonard passed away Nov. 6, 2020. He worked at mines near Scranton and Beulah.
Mark Pierce also believes that the coal miners are some of the greatest people on this planet.
“The coal industry and fossil fuels to a greater extent are always painted in a negative light by the media and a lot of organizations,” said Pierce, who is the purchasing manager at Freedom Mine near Beulah. I have always felt it’s an unfair portrayal of what we do and where we live.”
