Storms cause flash flood scare

The second heavy rainstorm within a week caused high water around Mercer County, closing U.S. Highway 200 last Thursday night and pushing Spring Creek close to flood stage. The flood also boosted Spring Creek by nearly 10 feet, forcing an evacuation of the RV Park in Zap.

According to Mercer County Sheriff Dean Danzeisen, at about 9 p.m. Thursday a sheriff’s deputy reported water from the swollen creek was beginning to breach nearby Highway 200 about one mile west of Zap. The sheriff’s department immediately closed the highway and began rerouting traffic, while the Mercer County Highway Department began scouring roads throughout the county for the sake of public safety.
