Thursday holiday raises thorny questions for Friday
By Daniel Arens
This is a week for holiday celebrations, but the occasion also raised questions and controversy for Mercer County employees and the county’s five commissioners.
During the regular meeting June 19, the county commission debated how to tackle time off for county employees with the holiday. Specifically, the Fourth of July falling on a Tuesday raised the issue of whether employees could or should get Friday off as well, segueing into a long weekend.
One of the issues is that there are some offices that will have to remain open, the “essential employees” who answer 9-1-1 calls or respond to emergencies. If the county courthouse in Stanton is closed Friday, and the employees there get that day off, how does that compare to those departments whose employees need to come in?
