Virtual Relay for Life nears 2009 goal

If there was any doubt that people in Coal Country care about funding a cure for cancer, there can be no doubt after the 2009 Relay for Life event. Come winter storm after winter storm, devastating spring flood waters and another blizzard on top of that and people still found it in their hearts to donate money for the cure – $27,415.87 and still counting.

The 13th annual Coal Country Relay for Life, the local American Cancer Society annual showcase event aimed at raising money to fight cancer, was held as a virtual event in 2009 due to flood damage at the usual site. When the local committee for the Relay first learned that Riverside Park wouldn’t be ready in time they looked at other options and soon realized that what had taken 12 years to build couldn’t be built in a few short weeks if moved to a different location.
