Miners get first win of 2013

The Beulah Miners earned their first win last Friday at home on a hot day. Before the game even started it was announced that the game would have mandatory stops for water because of the temperatures. Athletic Director Jeff Meissner said it was a provision that the NDHSSA added earlier this year. The hot temps were almost a complete opposite of the Miners’ first game of the season – a mud bowl with Hazen. But the adverse weather created an adverse game.

The Beulah-Hazen cross-country team opened their season two weeks ago with a good showing on a hot and humid day in Jamestown – the meet was mixed with class A and B teams. Last Thursday’s meet in Bowman only featured class B teams but the race day weather continued to be hot and humid.

Running in heat is tough and running in humidity is also tough. When you put both factors together it’s even tougher. Last Saturday’s meet for the Hazen Beulah cross-country team had both and was all about making it through a tough course at Centennial Forrest in Jamestown.

Beulah and Hazen have had some strong baseball recently. Hazen’s high school program has grown enough recently to become their own program and Beulah’s program has produced consecutive state tournament appearances. But there is one successful local team that few know about, the Beulah Blackjaws – a state amateur team.

This year’s American Legion Tournament was all that anyone could ask for. There were close stressful games, upsets and great individual performances. Last week Beulah hosted the five day state tournament and Grafton won it for the second consecutive year.

Beulah did the hard work to keep a talented Washburn team out of the state tournament, beating them in the section 7 semifinals, and Hazen did the finishing work in a loser-out game. Beulah didn’t show Hazen any sympathy in the finals winning the championship game 10-0 in six innings. Opening day – Beulah vs. Hazen

The Beulah Twisters entered the I-94 tournament as the top seed with every team focusing their effort on beating them

The Beulah Cyclones only have seven days before the section 7 American Legion baseball tournament begins. Beulah doesn’t need to play their best ball to advance to the state tournament since they are hosting the tournament this year, but they sure would like to knock off the 3-time repeating section champs, Washburn.

History repeats itself

The Beulah Cyclones seem to always struggle late in the legion season. The struggle tends to run from July to the end of the regular season. Last year the Cyclones were undefeated for most of the season until they dropped five games towards the end of the season. Two of the losses were to the Hazen Astros in Hazen.

Golf, food and fun seem like the key ingredients for a successful summer fundraiser. The Mercer County Ambulance Golf Tournament will more than likely have all three ingredients at their fund raiser this year.
