Beulah falls short of finals

By Jarann Johnson
Beulah played in a series of close one-run games at the State Class A tournament. Beulah topped Devils’ Lake 5-4 but fell to Wahpeton 4-3 the next day. Beulah tried to battle back through the elimination bracket, topping West Fargo 1-0, but couldn’t top Valley City in their final tournament game in Dickinson.
Beulah fell 7-5, ending their season. Even though Beulah started the game impatiently, they recovered for an early lead before suffering defeat.
The Beulah offense did not start their elimination game strong. In the first inning Valley City’s starting pitcher, Dalton Ondracek, only needed five pitches to get three outs.
Valley City’s offense didn’t muster much offense in the bottom frame, and the game went into the second inning tied at 0-0. Beulah didn’t repeat, with another quick swinging inning in the top of the second.
Beulah was patient and recorded back-to-back singles from Aaron Vallejo and Dain Sardelli. Matt Schnabel drew a walk to load the bases and give baseball fans their first clutch at-bat of the game.
John Suter approached the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Suter was patient and earned a walk, giving his team a 1-0 lead.
Beulah’s No.1 batter, Alec Battest, was hit by a pitch, moving Beulah’s lead to 2-0. In the bottom frame Valley City pushed base runners to second and third with two outs, but Beulah starter Derek Ferebee showed poise getting the out and preserving the shutout.
