Beulah puts their foot down on rivals
By Jarann Johnson
The Beulah Miners struggled earlier this year when they saw a zone defense against Our Redeemer’s. In basketball coaching circles, zone defense is used as a magical elixir to fix a lack of depth or quality defenders.
Hazen Head Coach Ben Nelson was hoping zone defense would be the elixir he needed to overcome the injury loss of Wyatt Carr, Region 7’s best player, but it wasn’t. Beulah dominated their rivals collecting a 42-point Region 7 home win.
Beulah quickly dashed all of Hazen’s upset hopes with a 23-4 first quarter lead and never turned back. At the end of the first half, Beulah led 49-10 and the rest was history.
After the game, Beulah Head Coach Jeremy Brandt said he expected to see Hazen’s zone defense and described his plan of attack to overcome it.
