Beulah wins state-ranked showdown again
By Jarann Johnson
Region 7 is a tough region, and almost everyone in the region knows that getting the region crown means going through Hazen, Beulah or Trinity. When Hazen and Beulah met last Friday both teams were ranked in the state poll and the role of Region 7 bully was up for grabs.
Beulah won the battle and proved that they will once again be the big bad bully of the region. The Miners topped Hazen 81-50 at home.
At the start of the game it looked like the game was going to be another Hazen-Beulah classic. Beulah only led by two points, 7-5, after a basket by senior post Calvin Aichele, but then things turned heavily in Beulah’s favor.
The Hazen offense started to struggle, only scoring 3 points in the final six minutes of the quarter and Jett Hettich, Beulah’s starting point guard, was ready to cook. The Miner’s senior point guard scored 11 first quarter points and the Miners held a 26-8 lead at the end of one period.
Even though the Bison were trailing by 18 points, they still had a chance to figure out what went wrong and fix it. Early in the second it looked like Hazen figured out their offensive problems by drawing shooting fouls on Beulah.
