Coal Bowl match-ups unique to 31st year

Come Friday night and Mercer County will be split down the middle for Coal Bowl XXXI.

The annual grudge football game between Hazen and Beulah may be more than 30 years old but that doesn’t stop players on both sides from treating the day as if it were a state title game.

For the second year in a row, the Coal Bowl will be the opening game of the season since the schools have dropped to different classes. Without its roots in the playoff picture, the Coal Bowl has still maintained its elevated tradition.
