Hazen VB headed to state
Get 3rd win over Miners
By Jarann Johnson
Nothing in sports is guaranteed or given, especially coveted spots in state tournaments. The Hazen Bison entered the Region 7 championship game against the Beulah Miners with two regular season wins and no losses to their nearby neighbors but knew they needed to earn a third win to accomplish their season goal of making the state tournament.
Beulah tried to turn the recent tide in the rivalry but couldn’t do it, falling in three set and endearing their quest to repeat as Region 7 champs.
The first set of the match proved to be a very competitive one. Hazen and Beulah battled through five ties and a questionable officiating call before the set started to see some shifts in momentum.
The questionable officiating call resulted in a game-tying kill by Hazen junior middle blocker Krista Slaugbaugh being overturned and gave Beulah an 11-9 lead. The decision didn’t ultimately effect the set and the score settled into a 14-14 tie.
The teams traded possession of the lead from there. Beulah led 16-14 after a Hazen hitting error and lifting violation. Hazen head coach Linette Irwin called a timeout, hoping to keep her team calm even though the set was getting closer to set-point.
The timeout initially failed. Hazen junior Steph Ziegler recorded a hitting-error out-of-bounds, making Beulah’s lead 17-14.
