Hazen went dancing in ‘85

By Jarann Johnson

Hazen basketball fans have been envious of Beulah’s success lately. Beulah’s had a great decade; winning a state championship and going to five state tournaments. Hazen hasn’t been to the B, since 1985. But old-timers can remember a time they did.
Hazen broke through for a state tournament appearance in 1985, topping nearby rival Beulah made it even sweeter. Thirty-five years later, it’s still a classic game locals remember watching at Minot State Dome.
Beulah’s always had a successful basketball program. Back in the 80s and 90s, Doug Olson led Beulah to five state tournament appearances. Olson’s ‘85 team was coming off of a 1984 state tournament appearance and hoping to make it back.
But they had a constant thorn in their side. Beulah’s only problem during the 1985 season was Hazen. Hazen beat Beulah in the regular season and district finals.
