Miners fall in OT
By Jarann Johnson
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. After a rough first half in the second round of the Region 7 boys’ tournament Monday, the Beulah Miners fought back to force overtime. But it wasn’t enough and they fell 63-59.
The game started off looking like the Miners were going to be the team in control of the game for most of it. Beulah led 4-2 but then Isaiah Kludt, the 5-foot-5 freshman point guard, short on experience and height, came up with a big play.
Kludt drove to the basket, and made a twisting and turning layup while being fouled. The freshman guard converted the bonus free throw, giving Hettinger-Scranton a 5-4 lead.
Kludt’s highlight play led to a 12-0 Hetttinger-Scranton run and put Beulah in a 14-4 hole. Reece Hoherz, sophomore guard, broke the streak but it was too late in the period to make up for the run. Beulah ended the first quarter trailing 17-8.
Hettinger-Scranton kept rolling in the second quarter and led 26-12 with about 4 minutes left in the half. Beulah senior point guard Jett Hettich made a 3-pointer, making the score 26-12, but a Hettinger-Scranton 3-point answer from junior Hayden Sadowsky pushed Hettinger-Scranton back up to a comfortable 29-15 lead.
