Miners place 4 at state tourney
By Jarann Johnson
Going into the state meet, most Miner fans thought the boys’ triple jump and girls pole vault would be where the Miners would do most of their damage at the Class B State Track and Field Meet last Friday and Saturday in Bismarck. Those fans were half right – there was a high placing in the girls pole vault, but the boys’ 400 relay second place finish was the surprise of the meet.
Combined, the boys and girls had 14 athletes competing at the meet. The high hopes in the triple jump were set in place at last year’s state meet when Alex Krebs and Casey Walcker placed in the top three of the event.
This year the triple jump wasn’t as kind to the Miners. Krebs, a senior, was the only Miner to advance from prelims to the finals. In finals Krebs couldn’t get the big leap he’d been hoping for all year, but he did earn an eighth-place finish with a jump of 42 feet and 1.50 inches.
The champion in the triple jump was Kellemon Hinton, Ellendale, with a jump of 46-03. Hinton went on to win the long jump and dethrone Walcker as the state champion with a jump of 22-03.50. Walcker’s longest jump was 20-03.50, which wasn’t long enough for a spot in finals.
