Miners top No. 1 team
By Jarann Johnson
The Beulah Miners knew that taking on Rugby meant taking on the No. 1 team in the state. On Saturday the Miners and No. 1-ranked team in the state met at the Minot State Dome in a rematch of a non-regional game from last year.
Last year’s game wasn’t much of a contest for the Miners. The Miners fell at the Minot State Dome 65-46 to Rugby.
Both teams competed in last year’s state tournament, but the Miners didn’t advance to the winner’s side of the bracket and Rugby made it all the way to the finals but lost to Fargo Oak Grove, so a rematch was never played.
The rematch finally happened last week and Beulah was out to prove that 2014 was going to be different than 2013.
Early on the Miners were making things very hard on Rugby’s top player, Brad Heidlebaugh, and played very strong defense. The Miners only gave up 6 first-quarter points and banged in 14 of their own to grab a 14-6 lead at the end of the period.
The Miners offense started to click very well in the second quarter and the defense continued to dominate the game, putting most of the state on upset alert. At halftime the Miners led 38-23 and looked well in control.
