North Stars earn perfect beginning

The first game of the season is always a little scary for coaches. The excitement and first-game jitters are enough to deal with but for the North Stars they faced an always-challenging Fargo Shanley for their opener last Friday.

With the advantage of being on home ice and a hidden surprise, senior Riley Olson scored a hat trick and led Hazen-Beulah in a 7-6 comeback win over Shanley for the first time in memory the North Stars beat a Fargo team.

"For the kids, especially the younger ones, it is a confidence builder," head coach Mark Schmitt said.

It took just over three minutes before Olson found the goal as he sliced in a shot from Brady Hillerud and Zach Morris.

But Shanley ended the period with three unanswered goals to be up 3-1 after the first 17 minutes of play.

Then, Schmitt said he saw something he didn’t quiet expect this early in the season. The North Stars dressed 13 players this year but six of them come directly from bantam. Schmitt said he was a little surprised to see those players really step up in the second period.
