Summer Baseball officially here
By Jarann Johnson
The summer baseball season started last week for both Beulah and Hazen. The biggest game on the early season calendar was a rivalry Babe Ruth matchup between Hazen and Beulah Monday night.
Beulah swept the home doubleheader, winning the first game 9-5 and the second game 10-0.
During the first game Hazen started Jayce Zuern at pitcher and Beulah started Mason Dolbec. Dolbec started the game by walking the first batter but recovered to toss a scoreless frame. Zuern and Hazen didn’t have the same luck after a leadoff miscue in the bottom of the first.
Dolbec ledoff for Beulah in the bottom frame and reached base on an error. Zuern hit the next batter and Chase Remboldt delivered a one-run single, giving Beulah a 1-0 lead.
Zuern kept struggling to find his groove during the first frame, hitting another batter and walking three other batters. Nate Battest hit a two-run double, Dayton Fiddler earned a run by drawing a walk, and a Hazen error allowed two more runs to score.
At the end of one inning Beulah led 7-0. There was a small bit of encouragement going into the second inning for Hazen – Zuern earned three strikeouts during the inning.
Hazen got one run back in the top of the second when Brandon Snyder drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs. But at the end of two innings, Beulah still held a strong 7-1 edge.
In the top of the third Hazen made another small cut into Beulah’s lead, scoring on a wild pitch. Hazen’s score cut Beulah’s lead to 7-2 going into the bottom frame of the third.
