The Hazel-Beulah team went to the Velva Invite and came away with a strong tournament. The Miners were led by Jeremy Leintz (120), Tyler Erickson (160), and Damian Eslinger (182) to a third place team finish at the meet.
Leintz didn’t have to wrestle for the first two rounds of pool action. Then he reeled off pins in Round 3 and Round 5 to earn the No. 1 seed from Pool A.
Leintz’s Round 3 pin came in 3 minutes and 58 seconds over Ethan Winick (Bishop Ryan) and his Round 5 pin came in 3:26 over Raymond Boelter (MonDak).
Leintz kept his pin-streak going in his first tournament match, pinning Jynnea Peterson (Harvey) in 1:06). The next match was against Kaydin Meiers (Stanley). Meiers is a senior and ranked sixth in the state at 120.
Leintz didn’t let the big match excite him too much and handled business, winning a 9-2 decision for a berth in the finals. There was another highly-ranked wrestler awaiting Leintz in the finals.
This time it was Braedon Gumke (Watford City), ranked fifth in the state. Leintz again showed hwy he is one of the state’s top seniors, winning an 8-3 decision for champion honors.
