Walcker and 400 relay hit state marks

By Jarann Johnson
The Miners did what they needed on the boys side to get more athletes qualified for state last Friday at the Central McClean Invite. They also did well as a team, taking third overall and the girls were seventh.
Joel DeLa Cruz didn’t make the state qualifying marks in the 100 and 200 but he inched closer to them with good showings. DeLa Cruz was first in the 200, finishing in 23.62 seconds. The state-qualifying mark is 23.62.
In the 100 he was second (11.58), and the state-qualifying mark is 11.44. DeLa Cruz didn’t get the state-qualifying marks on his own but  he did with help from teammates in the 400 relay. The Miners ran a season best 45.54, about .39 seconds faster than the qualifying standard.
