XC does well at state
By Jarann Johnson
The Beulah-Hazen (B-H) cross-country team entered the state meet with clear goals for their boys’ team. The goal was a second place finish, but for the girls the goal wasn’t as concise and was focused more so on being competitive and running hard.
Both teams accomplished their goals and ended the season happy with their efforts at Minot’s Souris Golf Course. The boys took second overall out of 40 teams and the girls took sixth overall out of 39 teams at the meet.
The boys were led by two all-state runners at the meet. Calvin Aichele was the first B-H runner to finish and was 13th overall with a time of 17 minutes and 27.3 seconds. Aichele’s time was fast enough to keep B-H even with other favorites – Bowman County, Rugby and Medina/Pingree-Buchanan – to take second overall.
New Town wrapped up first place and championship team honors with five runs in the meet’s top 10. But for the others, it was still close after the top 25.
Jett Hettich was the only other runner to get all-state honors for B-H, taking 18th overall (17:55.2). At that point in the race, Bowman had pushed two runners across the finish at 7th and 23rd place overall.
Medina also had a good start with two runners in the top 25 in 5th and 19th places. Rugby was also closing in on second place with runners finishing 23rd and 25th overall.
B-H quickly pushed two more runners across the line and looked in control of second place with four runners across the finish -- they only needed one more runner to finish to complete their score. Senior Brian Sitz was the no. 3 runner for B-H and finished 27th overall (18:21.2) and junior Adam Becker was the No. 4 runner, finishing 31st overall (18:24.6).
B-H race fans had to pause for celebration though, because Bowman made things close. Bowman put three runners across the line before B-H could.
