Center buildings being demolished

Demolition of vacant structures in Center is progressing. As of Sept. 28 five structures have been either demolished or are in the process of being demolished, according to Center Housing Authority member Joan Ronholdt.

Ronholdt said 11 structures are currently slated for demolition upon approval of the City Council. The Housing Authority began the process of scrutinizing vacant structures in 2007. Sandy Olin, Housing Authority Chairperson, said that the authority compiled a list for inspection. With the city’s permission the authority hired Mel Zent, Dakota West Inspections, who either recommended renovation or demolition using the International Property Maintenance Code of 2006 as his guide. Property owners were given a period of time to appeal to the city.
