Center figure skaters score big at State competition

Lace up those skates, winter isn’t over yet as the recent snowstorm has displayed. Six young skaters from Center brought home gold, silver and bronze as competitors at the annual Capital City Winter Classic skating competition held Feb. 28 in Bismarck.

All students at Center Elementary School, the skaters are Ashlyn Haag, 5, Kaitlynne Haag, 7, Madeline Henke, 10, Teegan Henke, 8, Abby Hintz, 9, and Teanna Hintz, 6.

The skaters competed in a Compulsory Program that consisted of the basic elements from their level and performed on half ice. They also competed in the popular Free Skate Program, which consists of a choreographed program to music of their choice. They performed solo on full ice.

The Center skaters prepared for the competition for months with their coaches and did very well, bringing home a total of five gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals.

Competition results: Ashlyn: Snow Plow Compulsory, Gold Medal, and Free Skate, Gold Medal; Madeline: Freestyle 5 Compulsory, Gold Medal, and Free Skate, Gold Medal; Teanna: Basic 3 Compulsory, Silver Medal, and Free Skate, Gold Medal; Kaitlynne: Basic 2 Compulsory, Silver Medal, and Free Skate, Silver Medal; Teegan: Basic 6 Compulsory, Bronze Medal, and Free Skate, Silver Medal; and Abby: Basic 6 Compulsory, Silver Medal, and Free Skate, Bronze Medal.

Following the competition and more long practice sessions and travel, the skaters laced up their skates and took the ice at the VFW Rink in Bismarck, to a crowd of cheering parents and supportive coaches from both the Bismarck Figure Skating Club and the Hazen Figure Skating Club where they take lessons.
