Not waiting around for a cure to appear

According to the American Cancer Society, one in five women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The well-known statistic was just another useless fact for members of the Brown family until one of their own was affected.

Center native Jeanette Brown was diagnosed with breast cancer May 25, 2004. She immediately had surgery, 12 weeks of chemotherapy and 33 treatments of radiation over a course of the next seven months. Jeanette was blessed to not have all the added side effects of chemo. Her final treatment was Dec. 18, 2004, and that Christmas was spent in uneasy silence.
