WWCS gets last laugh
By Jarann Johnson
Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton opened the Class B District 5 Babe Ruth tournament with a game against Lemmon (South Dakota). Neither team knew much about each other but after a back and forth seven-inning game they knew neither would give up easily.
WWCS won a back and forth game 13-7 with a late rally in the sixth inning.
Andrew Dirk started the game for Lemmon at pitcher. Dirk was hoping for a shutout inning but Washburn didn’t let those hopes take hold. Landyn Miller hit a two-out, two-strike one-run single giving WWCS a 1-0 first-inning lead.
WWCS starter Alex Retterath hoped he could get through the bottom of the first unscathed. Lemmon made sure to answer quickly and prevent Retterath from gaining confidence. Retterath gave up an RBI double to Dirk, tying the game at 1-1.
