8-game losing streak snapped
By Jarann Johnson
The Wildcats were close to breaking their losing streak multiple times during their 8-game skid. The Wildcats pushed two games into overtime but couldn’t hold on and lost. Last Saturday they finally held on for a win at home over Standing Rock 60-57.
The Wildcats were right where they wanted to be headed into the second half. They were up 28-23 but needed to close the half strongly for their first win since Dec. 17. Early in the third quarter it looked like that’s exactly what they were going to do.
The Wildcat’s senior stars – Danny Henke and Lane Erhardt – led a 12-4 run to open the period and give their team a 40-27 lead. The Henke-Erhardt connection did all the damage for the Wildcats in the third quarter and led 50-36 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter things got close. Standing Rock started the quarter with a 3-pointer cutting the Wildcat’s lead down to 11 points. Standing Rock followed with a put-back score cutting the Wildcat’s lead to nine points.
Standing Rock kept cutting away at the Wildcat’s lead and had it down to six points, 56-42, with five minutes to play. The team’s battled with neither gaining much of an advantage into the final two minutes.
