A new way to spend Labor Day weekend

A new way to spend Labor Day weekend
Opportunity knocks only once as the old saying goes so when the chance to host their own varsity volleyball tournament came tapping on the proverbial door, Hazen and Beulah school administration and coaches didn’t hesitate. Thus, the first annual Coal Country Invitational Volleyball Tournament was born with matches split between the Hazen High School and Beulah High School gyms. The 16-team competition will get underway with pool play starting at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Even though both Hazen and Beulah schools house top facilities and had the desire to host a varsity tournament, the schedule in recent years has been full of already established tourneys. And no one saw the benefit of conflicting with another town’s date but that all changed when the North Dakota High School Athletic Association calendar moved fall sports starting dates a week later with most schools commencing earlier.
Most of the area teams including Hazen, Beulah and Center-Stanton have traveled to the annual Watford City Tournament opening weekend for many years but with the Labor Day holiday falling on the calendar this season, those organizers opted to move their tournament dates to later in the season.
