Boys open season

By Jarann Johnson
Last Friday Night the Center-Stanton Wildcats started their 2015-16 season with a non-regional game against Heart River, a Region 7 team. The Wildcats suffered a 74-41 home loss to Heart River.
The early goings during the debut of Center-Stanton’s new head coach went well. Jacob Erhardt’s Wildcats only trailed by three points, 7-4, with four minutes left in the opening quarter.
The Wildcats’ offense hit a dead spot for the rest of the period -- the Wildcats only scored three points, which came off one play. Senior forward Weston Meckle was bumped while shooting and made a bonus free throw.
While the Center-Stanton offense struggled, Heart River started to gain a feel for the hoop and gym, closing on a 13-3 run and building a 20-7 lead. The Wildcats offense continued to struggle, only scoring three points in the second frame.
At the end of one half, the Wildcats trailed 39-10. The Wildcats played better offense in the second half scoring 31 points, but it was too late.
The Wildcats fell 74-41. Three players reached double-figures for the Wildcats: Meckle (13), Matt Huber (11), and Karson Backer (11).
After the game Coach Erhardt quickly gave his thoughts.
“I thought that our kids worked hard. I liked the effort. We definitely have some things to work on. I’m hoping by district time we are ready to go, hoping to get better every day,” Erhardt said.
