Cardinals open Region 8 tournament

The start of the game went smoothly for the Beulah Miners. Cole Messerschmidt faced three Cardinal batters and retired them all without any trouble. Christian Thompson’s start for the Cardinals was a little tougher.
Thompson loaded the bases and walked in a run before the Miners added two runs in consecutive at-bats. Alec Battest, sophomore, beat a first base throw giving the Miners a 2-0 lead. Then Messerschmidt followed by recording an RBI on a Cardinal error, giving the Miners a 3-0 first inning lead.
The Cardinals made it look like they weren’t going to let their tough first inning keep them down in the second inning. Senior catcher Danny Henke hit a leadoff single and Kolby Yantzer drew a walk, putting two on base with one out.
Karson Backer added to the Cardinals momentum with a single, putting three runners on the bases. Sophomore Will Sannes didn’t let the chance go to waste and forced a fielder’s choice that allowed the Cardinals to score their first run of the game.
The Cardinals kept their positive, believing momentum going in the bottom of the second by keeping the Miners off the scoreboard. But in the third inning, their upset momentum hope took a punch. Josh Remmick supplied the punch, a 1-run single making it 4-1. But the Miners didn’t do any more damage.
