Cardinals season ends

By Jarann Johnson
The Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton Cardinals had two successful seasons before this year, claiming a region championship in 2012 and a runners-up finish in 2013. But this year’s team was inexperienced and spent much of the year learning. They did finish with one all-region selection in senior catcher Danny Henke, but no championship game this season.
The Cardinals opened the tournament by falling to Beulah 15-2, but they still had a chance in the double elimination tournament if they could knock off Shiloh the next day. That chance never came and Shiloh won 10-0 in five innings.
Henke got the start at pitcher and things looked smooth early on. Henke retired two batters but an error at first base put one runner on, then Henke hit a batter – putting two on base. Going for out No. 3 against Dawson Fagerland, sophomore, wasn’t a good idea.
Fagerland turned Henke’s pitch into a three-run homer for Shiloh. From there, things just kept going Shiloh’s way. In the bottom of the first the Cardinals hit two consecutive singles, but the damage was minimal and Shiloh didn’t allow a run.
The Cardinals were down 4-0 when their next scoring chance came in the top of the third inning.
