Center-Stanton earns top 4 spot

By Jarann Johnson
The Center-Stanton Wildcats wanted to accomplish one goal this season -- make it to the last night of the Region 5 tournament. Monday night the Wildcats accomplished that feat by topping Grant County 3-1: 19-25, 25-18, 25-18, and 25-23.
The Wildcats’ win guarantees that they will play in the third-place game or the Region 5 championship game Thursday night. It didn’t look like the Wildcats were going to be earning any guarantees early in the game.
Grant County jumped out to a 22-13 lead in the first set. Center-Stanton looked like they were going to make a late counter when senior setter Madeline Henke scored on a push and junior middle Abbey Hintz recorded a kill.
Center-Stanton’s quick 2-0 run cut Grant County’s lead to 22-15 but a serving error stalled the streak. Grant County got a block from Taylor Roehl to force set point and Center-Stanton lost the set because of a netting violation.
The Wildcats knew they were going to have to start the second set of the match better and did, drawing even with Grant County early in the set. The set was tied at 5-5 before Grant County went on a 5-0 run, which featured an ace from Alexis Benz.
