Locals grab championship
Washburn and Beulah had battled it out. Both teams had one tournament win against each other and the games were close.
Washburn won the first game 2-1 and Beulah won the rematch 12-10. Now the teams met to decide a state tournament berth. Beulah pitched Derek Ferebee and Washburn started Kolby Yantzer.
In the first Yantzer got his team off to a good start, hitting a one-run double. The lead gave Washburn fans confidence heading into the switch but Beulah proved ready to counter in the bottom frame.
Beulah’s answer to Washburn started with two outs when Brandon Meier hit a one-run single, the Cory Rueb and Mason Winkler each followed with one-run singles, making the score 3-1.
Beulah got one more run across home plate when Zane Wroroniecki beat a throw to first base, making the score 4-1 in Beulah’s favor. From there Beulah looked in control Washburn was still struggling to solve Ferebee but the top of fourth started badly for Beulah.
