The will of the Wildcats

When asked how much confidence he had late in the Wildcats’ game versus the Washburn Cardinals, Center-Stanton girls’ basketball head coach Michael Bergstrom couldn’t lie.

"I’m never very confident," he said with a smile. "No, I knew we needed a basket. We got that 3-pointer from Bailey (Henke) – and that really helped."

As has become a helpful habit this postseason, the Wildcats again jumped out to an early lead. After the Cardinals righted the ship and took the lead, late Wildcat heroics earned District 9’s No. 4 seed C-S a narrow 42-41 victory over District 10’s No. 1-seeded Cardinals.

KaDee Berger, one of two freshmen in the starting lineup for the Wildcats, started the game’s scoring just one minute into the game.

Senior leader Henke banked in a 3-pointer from the left wing, and made good on a put back to help the Wildcats spring to a 7-0 lead.

The Cardinals got on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, and were able to narrow the scoreboard gap to 9-6 before the first quarter ended.
