Wildcats fall on Parents’ Night
Parents’ Night is an emotional one for seniors. Most seniors want to win the last time they play on their home floor and most parents want to remember their kid’s last home game with a winning smile. The Wildcats tried hard for that winning feeling but came up four points short against Heart River 57-53.
The Wildcats didn’t start the game strong, allowing a 6-0 Heart River run. Senior post Carly Benjamin broke the scoreless start for the Wildcats with 6:50 left in the quarter. But her score was quickly negated by a three-point play, making the score 9-2.
The Wildcats got back into the game with a 7-2 run, started by a Madeline Henke 3-pointer. Katie Windhorst, forward, added four points during the run that helped draw her team within two points 11-9. But the Wildcats failed to tie the game.
Heart River pushed their lead to five points with a three-point play, making the score 14-9 and added a score by Carly Northup, senior point guard, to end the quarter. The Wildcats only scored two points in the final three minutes of the period, and trailed 16-11 after one period of play.
The Wildcats kept the game close in the second quarter until there was 2:30 left in the first half. Heart River led 24-20, but closed out another quarter strongly. The Wildcats went the final two minutes and 30 seconds with only two points and found themselves down 30-21 at halftime.
The Wildcats got right back into the game early in the second half with two consecutive 3-pointers, making the score 32-28. From there, the Wildcats battled Heart River’s lead down to one point 37-36 with 1:50 left to play in the third.
But once again, a weak Wildcats finish to end the period hurt. Heart River took advantage, scoring nine unanswered to grab a 47-37 lead. Northup started the 9-0 run with a 3-pointer and had her team in a great position entering the final period.
