Wildcats fall short of repeat effort

By Jarann Johnson

Center-Stanton wanted to repeat as Class B Region 5 champions this season and came close to their season goal. But some slow starts in their 3-2  championship loss to tournament host Shiloh Christian derailed those hopes.
The game scores for the match were 19-25, 25-13, 25-21, 17-25 and 15-11.
The first set was close with both teams knotted at 7-7. Shiloh quickly pushed their lead to 11-7 thanks to three Center-Stanton hitting errors. Shiloh turned their lead into 14-10 advantage but great serving by Center-Stanton sophomore Karsyn Haag led to a strong Center-Stanton rally.
Haag recorded 1 ace during a 7-0 run, which put Center-Stanton up 17-14. Center-Stanton held on to the lead for the rest of the set and won 25-19. Amber Frank, a Center-Stanton junior hitter, earned set point.
The second set of the match didn’t start well for Center-Stanton. They quickly found themselves down 0-5, then 13-5. Center-Stanton coach Janet Erhardt decided to call timeout and try to re-focus. Shiloh didn’t allow Center-Stanton to battle back and won the set 25-13 on a kill by Graycin Wanzek.
